FAQs
  1. I am a new Fayetteville resident. How do I start solid waste service?
Welcome to our All America City. The City provides one green 96-gallon rollout cart for household garbage and one 35-gallon blue rollout cart for recycling to each single family address within the city limits. These carts are to stay with the house. If there is not a green or blue cart at your home, please call 433-1329 so we can replace it. Please use the lookup feature on our web pages (under Pickup Schedules) to see your pickup days for household, yard waste and recycling.

  2. What do I need to do to prepare my garbage for pickup?
Please bag garbage before placing in your green City-provided trash cart. Place cart one to two feet from the curb no earlier than dusk the day before your pickup and no later than 7 a.m. on the day of your pickup. Have cart handle facing the house, four feet from any other objects or carts. Remove cart from the curb on the day it has been serviced. Carts should be stored in an inconspicuous place, not easily viewed from the street. Additional bags or other containers of garbage will not be collected. Your garbage collection day is also your recycling day with the same guidelines for cart placement and removal. Recyclables should not be bagged, but remain loose in the cart. Yard waste should be placed in sturdy bags and/or 32-gallon containers with sturdy handles and tight fitting lids. Neither bags nor personal containers can weigh over 50 pounds. The green and brown rollout carts can be used for trash day or yard waste day but cannot be mixed in the same cart. The blue recycling cart (either size) is for recyclables only.

  3. What is the cost to purchase a cart from the City?
The City provides each single family household with one 96-gallon green rollout cart and a 35-gallon blue recycling cart. Carts available for purchase are brown 96-gallon rollouts (yard waste and/or household garbage) and blue 96-gallon rollouts for recycling. The brown cart is $52, while the blue is $54. Carts can be picked up at our offices or delivered for an additional $11.25. Prices are subject to change.

  4. How do I find my pickup schedule?
You can use the lookup schedule on our website; find it under Pickup Schedules. Simply type in your street address to view your regular collection days. The holiday collection schedule is on a sticker on your green cart, or view it on our website as well.

  5. My garbage/recycling was missed. What do I do?
Occasionally a container is missed. Call 433-1329 to report missed garbage pickup and we will have it serviced as soon as possible, usually within 48 hours. To report missed recycling or other recycling collection issues, please call Waste Management, Inc. customer service at 488-2827.

  6. My cart is damaged. Can I get it fixed?
The City will repair green carts that have been damaged while a service is being rendered or due to normal wear and tear. If it cannot be fixed we will replace it. We are unable to repair or replace carts that were damaged as a result of vandalism, abuse or odor. The City will also maintain blue recycling carts and brown carts purchased from the City. Call 433-1329 and service will be scheduled on your next collection day. The cart must be at the curb for repair.

  7. Can you pick up large items?
Yes. Items that are too large to fit in your cart must be scheduled for collection by calling 433-1329. Such items include furniture, appliances, miscellaneous metals, swing sets, etc. It can also be limbs or brush too large for the cart or bags but do not exceed six inches in diameter or are more than five feet in length.

  8. Does the City collect construction materials?
The City does not collect contractor-generated construction materials. If the items are homeowner-generated, the City will pick them up for a fee. Please call 433-1329 for more information or to schedule a pickup.

  9. What can I do with hazardous materials? What about old tires?
Hazardous materials should be taken to the Cumberland County Hazardous Materials Collection Facility on Wilkes Rd. Tires are to be taken to the Ann St. Landfill, also operated by Cumberland County. More information about both facilities can be found at http://www.co.cumberland.nc.us/solid_waste.aspx.
