"Working to Promote Equal Opportunity"

The Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations Department is responsible for promoting equal opportunity and fair treatment among all residents in the City of Fayetteville.

The Human Relation Department Mission Statement is: "To protect civil rights and promote equal opportunity and positive community relations within the city of Fayetteville and its workforce, and to provide efficient and effective staff support to the Human Relations Commission."

The Human Relations Commission is an 18-member body appointed by the Mayor and City Council (11 city residents) the County Commission (4 county residents) and there are three military (3) ex-officio (1 civilian and 2 uniform) appointees from Ft. Bragg/Pope AFB.

The Human Relations Commission is an 11-member body appointed by the Mayor and City Council and comprises both city and county representatives. The Human Relations Commission provides the City Council with advice on improving human relationships and encourages harmony among racial and ethnic groups.

The Human Relations Department provides the following services and programs:

  • Staff support for the Human Relations Commission
  • Receives and investigates equal opportunity and unfair treatment complaints
  • Develop and foster programs designed to improve human relations and community unity.
  • Secure resolution of Fair Housing and Landlord Tenant Complaints.
  • Provides training on equal opportunity and human relations matters.
  • Cooperate with City and County Community Development Departments on strategies to resolve housing issues that discriminate or adversely affect citizens in a disparate way.

The Human Relations Commission's Mission Statement is: "To facilitate and advocate programs, projects, and actions to ensure a better quality of life and the civil and human rights of all citizens, without regard to race, sex, religion, creed, national origin, age, familial status, or disability."

The Human Relations Commission provides the City Council and County Commission members with advice on improving human relations and encourages harmony and community unity among racial, religious, disabled community, and ethnic groups.
